Village Green

The picture shows some of the survey results overlayed on the 1850 map. The geophysical surveys were undertaken in 2022 to try to find the school shown on the 1850 map. The area was generally referred to as Shop Hill. In the 1861 John Rawlinson, master, was listed as living in the School House and in 1871 The Hill, another document around that time mentioned School Hill.
After training in the use of the resonence equipment two surveys were undertaken by 20 members under the supervision of Dr. Jon Kenny. The first one in July when only half of the green was covered as the weather had been so dry. The second in September covered the whole area. The school walls were not discovered but the south side of the blacksmith shop was visible (inside the blue rectangle). The area where the school was indicated on the map was very hard packed soil so provided no reading (cream coloured area on the right of the picture). The red blocks were areas where the equipment did not register a measurement due to the ground conditions.
Everyone enjoyed doing the survey and look forward to the next one.
