Notification of the opening of the New Wesleyan Methodist Church

The notification was included in the booklet 230 Years of Methodism in Hambleton. The York Herald on 14th July, 1900 reported the opening.
Methodism in Selby Circuit. Yesterday was red letter day in the annals of Wesleyan Methodism in the Selby Circuit. A new chapel, which has been erected at a cost of something like £1,200, was opened in the presence of a large concourse of Methodists from various parts of the district. The weather was delightfully fine. The new structure, to which Mr. James Thompson, of Hambleton, has been a liberal contributor, was opened by Miss Thompson. After the ceremony a discourse was delivered to a crowded congregation by Rev. W. L. Watkinson (ex President of the Conference), who travelled specially from London to fulfil the engagement. A public tea followed, and at night a densely packed meeting was held under the presidency of Mr. R. Scholey, of Riccall. Congratulatory speeches were delivered. It was stated that Mr. Thompson had contributed another £50 to the chapel funds.
