On the 1945 and 1946 Service Register he was listed as Albert and his address was listed as Chapel Street.
Bert as he is known was born and bought up in Hambleton. He was born in December, 1923 to Albert & Blanche (nee Talbot) and had seven siblings Leslie, Alfred, Violet, Edith, Audrey, Edgar and Alec.
Bert served in North Africa and then worked his way up to Naples where he met Concetta (Tina). When he was in Naples he frequented the same places as Harry Secombe, Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine all of whom formed the Goons while they were there. They used to entertain the troops.
Spike Milligan met a girl and used to visit the same places as Bert and Tina. Apparently some of the memories in his war memoirs mirror those of Bert.
When he returned home Tina came too and they married in Hambleton in April 1947. One of the residents commented that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Sadly Tina died in 2003. Bert continues to live in the village.
