Leslie Howcroft

On the 1945 Service Register his address was listed as Chapel Street.
Leslie was born and bought up in Hambleton. He was born on 15th July, 1914 to Albert & Blanche (nee Talbot) and had seven siblings, Charles Albert, Alfred, Violet, Edith, Audrey, Edgar and Alec.
He was listed on the 1939 Register of Electors but his entry on the register which detailed names, date of births and occupation was redacted.
He saw a lot of action during his military career and in WWII. He served in Poona, India; Basra, Iraq; South Africa; Palestine; El Alamein, Egypt; Tobruk, Libya; Montezua, Italy and France. It is believed that he served with Field Marshall Montgomery in the desert at some point.
He was at Dunkirk and was pulled from the water in his underwear as he swam from the beach to the boat.
On return he continued to live in the village until his death on 1st July, 2003 and is buried in the Village Cemetery.
