St Mary’s bell following restoration

The 1881 bell was removed for restoration by the Bellhanger and two helpers and returned to Taylor’s Bell Foundry at Loughborough who had made it originally. The bell weighed over 1 hundredweight (about 51 kilos) and was in need of a new headstock, clapper and rope and cleaning.
When returned to Hambleton had a new headstock on a sealed ball bearing, quarter turned, been sand blasted and a new rope and hand-woven red sally. The bell was returned to its rightful place with the help of the Bellhanger, Selby Fire Brigade and several villagers including, Bob Stubbs, Trevor Millington and Gilbert Thwaites. The bell was rededicated on 17th October, 1982 in Memory of Frank Thwaites whose long held wish was to have the bell restored.
