The Old School acted as the Church

The Old School acted as a Church for weekly services and baptisms prior to St Mary’s being built. Weddings and funerals continued to be either at Brayton or Gateforth. Families were given the option of the three sites and not all Hambleton parents chose to have their children baptised in the Old School.
In 1880 there were 5 christenings; in 1881 9 and in 1882 5, the last being on 16th April as from June 1882 onwards the services were in St Mary’s. Between November 1880 and August 1882 there were 13 weddings involving at least one Hambleton resident at Brayton and 17 funerals of Hambleton residents between November 1880 and December 1881.
