A very old School!

A report in a Leeds Directory stated that the School in Hambleton, with a house for the master, was built by subscription. As part of the enclosure award process the school received an awarded of 5 acres, 1 rood, 7 perches in Hough Field which was let for £9, which would provide free education for 6 children. As part of the Award the Trustees of Hambleton School had to contribute to the maintenance of Morton Carr Drain. The census of 1841 shows William Beever as a schoolmaster and in 1851 William as a schoolmaster and his wife Lydia as a schoolmistress. A report in the York Herald in May 1894 reported on the death some 35 years earlier of Jonathan Clayton aged 68. Jonathan Clayton who lost an arm by the discharge of a gun when young ands a little later was left some money so did not need to work. He commenced to keep a school at Hambleton, some 4 miles from Wistow where he lived. He walked to Hambleton each morning and home each evening. However, when he started to provide funds for the school is uncertain. When the school started has yet to be confirmed but Brayton Cemetery records show the death of a school master from Hambleton in 1641.
