School life 1800 - 1898

Where the School was between 1800 and 1872 is still being researched but there was a school shown on the 1850 map by the village green. The ‘Old School’ opened on 23rd September, 1872. The School had two rooms, the under 7 year old were taught in the small room and older children in the bigger room. Water was collected from a well in the garden of the School Masters House next to the School.
Special Events or Additional Holidays -
1872 - 23rd September the School opened with 58 pupils.
1873 - 21st February the children were given a days holiday as Mr. Frost had a bad cold and could not attend.
1873 - The school closed for 3 weeks starting at midday on Thursday 11th July for pea picking as ‘even the little ones can work on that’.
1877 - 27th November the children were give half day holiday because the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward was part of a shooting party in a local wood. Albert Edward was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The children would no doubt have gone to see this visitor even if the school had not been closed.
1883 - The school closed for an extra 5 weeks because of an outbreak of diphtheria.
1895 - 29thJanuary the children were given an extra days holiday as there was a steam ploughing match in the village.
1898 - 31st March, the school register showed 119.
What and how the children were taught - According to the Hambleton School Log Book the lessons taught were scripture, arithmetic, reading, dictation, writing including how to write a letter and needlework.
