Joan Scott was well known as the person who set up Selby Animal Sanctuary. However, before that animal lover Joan Scott together with her husband Ted had kennels and catteries at their home and used the garden as a haven for sick birds such as owls, kestrels and herons. When they were in their 60s decided that having cared for animals on a voluntary basis for 21 years there was a need for an animal sanctuary. They launched an ambitious project to build a sanctuary for sick and stray animals at an estimated cost of £75,000. Unfortunately, Mr. Scott died in the 1990s before their dream was realized, but Mrs Scott continued with their dream and the sanctuary was built. The Sanctuary was run by Mrs Scott and Trustees caring for wild, domestic and farm animals. Villagers were often to be seen taking the dogs for walks around the village, some of whom would call at the Red Lion for a lunch time drink en route. Mrs Scott ran the sanctuary until her health deteriorated. Mrs Scott died aged 94 May 2014.
