Enid Thwaites and Jinny selling ice cream

The Thwaites Family started to produce ice cream in the stone house on the corner of Chapel Street, around 1924 or 1925. After the ice cream was established Enid Thwaites' Grand Father bought her a donkey and a little trap which was altered and made into the ice cream cart. It had rubber tyres on the wheels so was nice to ride in. Enid and Jinny went around the village selling ice cream sandwiches for one, two or three pence not forgetting the halfpenny cornets. They went to all the agricultural shows held in the surrounding villages, and to Haddlesey on her own with the donkey and cart and never met anyone who was not friendly. It was safe where ever you went the village families let her put Jinny in their grass fields. She was also tethered on Shop Hill (Village Green) by the old Blacksmith’s shop and Smithy. Jinny’s final days were spent in a field between Bar and Mulberry Farms. A house was built on the field which became the home of the local doctor, Dr. Mary Wells. The house was demolished in late 1990’s to make way for The Willows development.
