Records show that Mr. John Gibson owned Holly Tree farm in 1798, with the final ownership being that of Mr. George and Mrs. Lena Ward. George inherited the farm for his parents George Wilson Ward and Hilda Ward (nee Anson). Hilda was a relative of Theophilis Gibson Anson, born in 1839. Married in 1948, George and Lena moved in, with George working for Mr. Lister at Main Road farm until he retired. Lena, having raised two children, John and Jean, did a variety of jobs including farm work such as potato picking, an activity many residents took part in before mechanisation, and working in the village shop on what is now known as St. Mary’s Approach. She was an active member of Hambleton W.I. and was well known for her delicious contributions of baking for any village fund raising events. Sadly Holly Tree farm had to be sold in 1999, it was demolished and developed into a small estate which was aptly named Holly Tree Court.
