Garth Farm

Some of the owners and farmers identified so far include:1798 owned by William Bew; 1908 Lord Londesborough sold to Harris Anson, 1932 the Bradley Family became tenant farmers and continued until 1948. At some time during this period the farm was sold to Raymond Kitson Poskitt. 1940 Dacre, Son & Hartley offered the farm for sale on 26th February in the George Hotel, Selby as part of Harris Anson’s estate and was sold for £2,250; in 1949 the Millington family purchased and moved into the farm. Irvin Gibson remembers ‘Mr Bradley used the Maltings to store old machinery. Inside there was machinery for winnowing (removing chaff from the grain) and such like, much of it was fitted to be mechanically driven from an outside belt wheel. This was where Mr. Bradley came into his own because he had the local threshing tackle and two traction engines. There was a Fowler and a McLaren. The former was thought to be the best because it was made in Leeds. The McLaren was the newest and had a canopy. Both were in running order though and Irvin reported seeing both in use. It was interesting how quickly steam could be got up on these machines; they were quite often in demand for rescue purposes when cars or other traffic ended up in the town dyke. This could happen two or three times a year and Billy could get steam up in an hour or so and would trundle down the road accompanied by what seemed half the village. He would line her up on the road, run a cable from the winding drum, clear everyone out of the way if the policeman wasn’t there, climb up on the footplate and with half a dozen hefty chugs out would come the subject like a cork out of a bottle.’
