The Wheatsheaf

The research of names and dates continues and we will be talking to previous landlords and ladies who are known to many of the current village residents to confirm dates etc. The earliest reference we have found so far to the Wheat Sheaf (Wheatsheaf) was in May 1853 when an adjourned inquest to a fatal train crash was held in the Wheat Sheaf. Some of the names which have appeared in electoral roles are 1887 when Samuel Simpson was listed as the Publican. He was still there in 1891. 1911 Mr. Hutchinson, 1937 Harry Seller, 1957 Mr Hesp and 1961 David & May Thomas. Flo and Dick Bell ran the Wheatsheaf between 1959 and 1984. The Wheatsheaf was the first public house in the village to have electricity in the late 1920’s or early 1930’s as the then landlord made an arrangement with Chilvers & Palframan to use their generator to run a light bulb in each room.
