William was a private in the 12th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), service number 14388 and died on 14th July, 1916 aged 27. He is buried Quarry Cemetery, Montauban. He was the son of William Newstead Middleton and Jane Ann Middleton, of Hambleton and the address appears to be Scarths Cottages, Hambleton, though where this might be has yet to be discovered. He was listed in the 1911 Census as a Farm Labourer.
