The Selby Times & Howden & Goole Advertiser reported on 26th January, 1945 that Mrs Edith Marian Clark of 89 Wigginton Road, York had received the news that her husband Lance Corporal Frank Clark had been killed in action aged 27. He was the son of Frank and Annie Clark, Main Road, Hambleton. He joined the tank corps on 29th January, 1939 and survived Dunkirk. After a short leave he joined the 6th Parachute Division and was involved in the D-Day landings. He was initially reported missing on 3rd January. Before joining the army he worked at Rostons Paper Mill in Selby. The following week the paper included this photograph of Lance Corporal Clark. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission state that he died on 3rd January during the Western Europe Campaign. His record shows his battalion as 13th (2/4th Bn. The South Lancashire Regiment) and service number 7890546. His death is commemorated in Hotton War Cemetery reference V1.D.3.
