Soldiers description of what happened to him after he was wounded.

Lieutenant Winterburn wrote about his ecperience. Concerning the field dressing station at Leavillers and the Canadian Clearing station at Doullens I remember very little, and from what I can recall it was better so. I had only just left Doullens when the Germans dropped a bomb on the very portion of the hospital in which I had been. I was taken to Rouen and began to gather my senses. I was glad to get away from my first hospital in Rouen as so many in the ward were passing away. This hospital was in a monastery. A happy month was spent on the edge of a typical French forest some three miles south of Rouen. Then it was Blighty. My feelings on seeing the dear old country during my journey from Southampton to Oxford were beyond expression. The photograph was taken in Somerville College, Oxford, and show Tommy, even under awkward conditions made life both interesting and enjoyable. My three months at Oxford were very happy. We were all well cared for and entered our games under difficult conditions with all sporting keenness. In conclusion, I hope our children will never be faced with going through similar experiences and it will be enough merely to read these short notes.
