The houses on Barrack Yard were demolished before the Second World War with a number of residents moving into newly built Council houses on the Main Road. During the war Nissan huts were built to accommodate soldiers, with officers living in Hambleton House. The outlines of Nissan huts can be seen in the photograph with the one still standing being used for car repairs behind the car showroom. The long building at the side of the showroom was the stables and coach-house belonging to Hambleton House. A P.O.W. camp was based on the site of the Mushroom farm in Gateforth, with several of the detainees remaining and working in and around Hambleton, after the war finished.
