New Chapel

The land, south of the School Room, was purchased for the New Chapel from Mervyn Dunnington Jefferson in 1899 for a sum of £40.00. The plot measured 400 superficial square yards which formed part of a field called Alse Close. The final cost of the project was £1,350. The foundation stone was laid on 7th September, 1899 by Mr. Farrar and memorial stones were laid by William Thomas Farrar and James Thompson of Hambleton. Memorial stones were also laid by people from Barlow, Burn and Selby. The stone laying ceremony was followed by a tea, which included Yorkshire meat, held in a near by barn owned by Mr. George Tunningley. The harmonium which provided the music was offered for sale to the Schoolroom in 1904 and was at some point replaced with an organ.
In 1920 permission was given to erect a War Memorial in the Chapel, it is identical to the memorial in St Mary’s Church. Electric lights were installed in both the Chapel and Schoolroom in 1937 by Mr Levitt for the sum of £24.10.0.
