Chapel Schoolroom

The 1851 Census Returns counted 80 children attending Hambleton Chapel Sunday School.
In December 1876 Hambleton Wesleyans bought a plot of land from Mr. Tasker Trees for £11.00 on which the Wesleyan School Room was built. The land was next to Mr Trees home. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs Trees. The building filled the whole plot of land so the door opened straight on to Chapel Street and the arch of the door way can still be seen. The door was blocked up and a new door was put in the back of the building around 1914. Although now called Chapel Street the name on the 1798 Enclosure Award Map was Mill Road but the plan contained in the Deed for the land purchase refers to it as the High Road running from Gateforth to Hambleton. The Schoolroom was looked after by a separate Trust from the Chapel until the 1960s despite discussions being held in 1912 to bring them both undert the same Trustees.
