Old Chapel

The exact date of the construction of the ‘Old Chapel’ is unclear. There is evidence that the building was enlarged in 1816 and a census in 1851 reported that Hambleton Wesleyans were said to worshipped in a building built before 1800. On 8th September, 1899 the Selby Times includes a paragraph reporting that a new Chapel was to be built: ‘Erected upwards of 70 years ago, the Old Chapel has seen many changes in Methodism in and around the village, and while it served its day and generation well and faithfully, the members of the society believe the time has now arrived when a more commodious and convenient building should take its place.’ However, the new Chapel had seating for 160 – 200 depending on the presence of the Vestry screen. The old Chapel held between 240 and 280 depending on the year the numbers were recorded. Once the New Chapel was built the Old Chapel was converted to two cottages.
