The Anson window in the South aisle

The south aisle window was designed by Christopher Whall in memory of Harris Hartas Anson a Second Lieutenant in the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment who died on 30th August, 1918 aged 28 years. The window together with a wall mural were unveiled by the Bishop of Bevely in September 1920.
The window depicts a knight (representing a soldier) receiving the ‘crown of life’ on his death.
He was the son of Harris and Eliza Anson, who lived in Greystones, Hambleton. Harris Anson senior was a JP and both him and his wife are buried in Hambleton Cemetery and Harris Hartas is commemorated on their headstone.
Christopher Whall was a renowned stained glass artist who started work in 1880s and continued into the early 1920’s.
