The oak carving by G W Milburn above the altar

How or when St Mary’s Hambleton obtained carving is not certain but Historic England record that a sketch in Mr Milburn’s Day Book would indicate that it was carved in 1903 and installed by private subscription. George W Milburn was born in York in 1844 and died in 1944. He was a master woodcarver, stonemason and sculptor. He did work for 150 churches in both wood and stone and more than 270 of his works still exist.
