Hambleton Pavilion

The photograph shows Hambleton Cricket Club Cup Winners taken in the Cricket Field, Common Lane Pavilion A. Simpson, W. Norton, G. Clayton, T. Howcroft, B. Howcroft, B. Saynor, C. Parker with cup, C. Issatt, the date is not known. The earliest reference to Hambleton Cricket Team found so far is a report of a match between Selby Volunteers and Hambleton reported in The Selby Times, and Howdenshire and Goole Advertiser on Saturday 14th August, 1869. Hambleton won with 8 wickets to fall both teams having scored 66 runs. A newspaper report of a match in 1908 Hambleton v. Church Fenton (ordinary) listed the team and how they performed in the match. C. E. Anson, 1bw, b Smith – 7; Mr Anson not out 18; J Sayner b Webb 0; G Anson b Webb 4; H H Anson b Smith 4; A H Anson not out; W Neville c Darabrough b Parker 0; Extras 7; Total (for 5 wickets) 42. Claude Anson played for Yorkshire on at least one occasion and was a member of the Yorkshire Gentlemen’s XI. The School had cricket teams in 1920s and they played on a field by the Main Road owned by Septimus Brown.
