Football in Hambleton

1903 is the earliest record of a Hambleton Football Club. A newspaper report lists the final positions in the Association Football Selby & District League Lamb Shield. We have no photograph, as yet, of the 1907 team but one newspaper reports that in January Hambleton were fined for arriving late and that three matches had been played without score.
A second report in April records that Selby and Hambleton Clubs met in the Selby & District Cup Competition last night on the Bowling Green, Selby before a large attendance. Firth started for Selby with a strong wind against them. The visitors were soon pressing, and after some excellent passing in their ranks, Shaw scored the only goal during the first half for Hambleton. On changing ends the game became fast and vigorous, and Firth, following up, scored for Selby. Aggressive tactics were still persued by Selby, who kept play in the visitor’s territory, Wright adding the home team’s second point. The game ended in semi-darkness with the score Selby 2, Hambleton 1. Hambleton played 4 games, won 1, lost 3, scored 2 goals, had 11 scored against them so had 2 points. The Shield was won by Riccall.
The Village School had a team in the 1920s, the information and any photographs are included in the Old School section of Education. Some of the names in the school team appear in the adult teams a few years later. The current club was established in 1985 and a Junior Section was reformed in 2017 open to both boys and girls.
