Hambleton Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association - Rose Bowl

Following the decision to leave the Yorkshire Association of Women's Institutes the members joined the newly formed Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association, the first meeting of Hambleton Y.C.A. being a Committee Meeting which was held in the Old School on 23rd March 1983, with Committee members Mrs. Phyllis Craven being elected Chairman, Mrs. Maureen Metcalfe - Secretary and Mrs Ingrid Millington - Treasurer. Over the years Committee members came and went but Mrs. Joan Upton, who was elected as Treasurer in 1984 remained in post until the Y.C.A. branch closed in January 2017. In 1985 the Y.C.A. moved from the Old School into the newly build Village Hall and at the following A.G.M. in February 1986 Mrs. Betty Dixon became Chairman, serving as Chairman until her death in 2016. Mrs. Pauline Clarke volunteered to sit on the Y.C.A. Committee in February 1987, becoming joint Secretary with Mrs. Janette Elsworth in 1988, and in 1989 became Secretary until the close of the Y.C.A. in 2017. A table cloth, for the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer's table used during the monthly meetings, was purchased and each member and subsequent new member signed their name on the table-cloth which was then embroidered over by Mrs. Dolly Ellis and latterly by Mrs. Ingrid Millington. The format of the Monthly meetings followed the programme that the former Hambleton W.I. branch conducted with Minutes of the previous meeting being read and accepted by members and information on future events and outings being given. There was a monthly raffle, a monthly competition and a main Speaker for the evening. The speakers varied enormously, from florists doing floral arrangements, which were raffled at the end, film/slide shows of interesting places around the world, and cookery demonstrations to antique collectors who brought old artefacts. Some months there would be Games evenings such as Beetle Drives and Bingo, Jumble Sales, Coffee Evenings and Fashion Shows that were attended by other Y.C.A. branches and ladies from within the village. Each year a nominated charity was given a sum of money from club funds, partly raised by the coffee evenings and other events over the year. Members held an Annual Spring and Christmas Lunch and attended various functions/ meetings held by the Central Committee of Yorkshire Country Women's Association who also produced a monthly magazine detailing all future events around the County for members to attend. The Minutes of the monthly meetings record and reflect on some wonderful events that have occurred over the lifetime of the Club reminding members of the wide diversity of talents such as art, needle crafts, cooking and baking, flower arranging and organizational skills that all the members had in creating a vibrant village club.
Each year a silver rose bowl was awarded to the member who gained most points from entering the monthly competitions the previous year. The competitions were usually associated with the theme of the Guest Speaker for each meeting. The bowl was presented at the Annual General Meeting. The Annual Rose Bowl winners were: 1984 Mrs. Madge Thompson; 1985 Mrs. Madge Thompson; 1986 Mrs. Joan Upton & Mrs. Phyllis Craven; 1987 Mrs. Joan Upton; 1988 Mrs. Phyllis Craven; 1989 No name inscribed on the Rose bowl; 1990 Mrs. Phyllis Craven & Mrs. Betty Hairsine; 1991 Mrs. Joan Scott; 1992 Mrs. Betty Hairsine; 1993 Mrs. Phyllis Craven; 1994 Mrs. Betty Hairsine; 1995 Mrs. Betty Hairsine; 1996 Mrs. Phyllis Craven; 1997 Mrs. Rose Longbottom; 1998 Mrs. Joyce Millington & Mrs. Betty Hairsine; 1999 Mrs. Pauline Clarke & Mrs. Bessie Hind; 2000 Mrs. Pauline Clarke; 2001 Mrs. Joyce White; 2002 Mrs. Joan Upton; 2003 Mrs. J.M. As the years progressed the number of Y.C.A. members steadily declined and the expenses for running the monthly club increased due to the costs of Speakers and Annual Fees needed to be paid to the Central Office. A decision was made by the whole membership that we separate from the Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association and run an independent monthly Club with a new style of programme for the monthly meetings and Hambleton Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association closed in January 2017.
