Hambleton Cemetery

Prior to the gift of land for a cemetery in the village residents were most likely to be buried in the cemetery at Brayton. The Hambleton Cemetery was gifted to the village by Andrew Anson who was at the time Chairman of the Parish Council. The consecration of the burial ground by the Bishop of Whitby was reported in the Leeds Mercury on Friday 16th January,1925. The Burial Authority is administered by the Parish Council and any past or present residents of Hambleton have the right to be buried there. The first burial was a Mr Thomas Granger in July 1925. His grave is by the path about half way between the gate and the back hedge. The siting of graves appears to have been random for a number of years. The gates were purchased by Mr. James (Jim) Price in memory of his wife Gladys. Mr Price was Chairman of the Parish Council for many years prior to his death in 2006. A seat was installed in the cemetery by the Parish Council in 2015 following a request from a parishioner so that relatives can sit and reflect a while if they so wish.
